Daimler introduces dual-clutch transmission on new truck

By their very nature, trucks are rarely environmentally friendly – however, German car and truck making giant Daimler is determined to reduce the emissions of its heavy goods fleets with some innovative technology.

The new Fuso Canter from Daimler Trucks will benefit from the first dual-clutch transmission to be used for trucks – it offers lower fuel consumption as well as less wear to auxiliary equipment, reducing the burden on the driver. In addition, the new Fuso Canter will be available with a start/stop function as an optional extra.

The dual-clutch transmission is based on a mechanical six-gear manual transmission and includes two hydraulic wet clutches and electronic control. The first clutch is used for forward gears one, three and five; while clutch two deals with gears two, four and six. The dual-clutch means that the next gear is engaged while driving, which allows for extremely fast and smooth gear shifting. It also eliminates the torque losses of an automatic transmission because it operates with the high level of efficiency of a mechanical transmission.

In addition, the Fuso Canter benefits from an efficient Euro 5 four cylinder turbo diesel engine. The drive unit has a displacement of 3.0litres and is available in three power units: 96kW; 110kW; and 129kW. There are also two exhaust gas after-treatment systems.
