Wireless electric vehicle charging is coming toLondon– in what is a UK and industry-leading initiative.
Qualcomm Incorporated, which recently acquired HaloIPT, will collaborate with the UK Government and Transport for London to deliver the trial which is expected to start in early 2012 and will involve as many as 50 electric vehicles.
As part of the trial, Qualcomm wireless inductive power transfer technology will be used that allows high efficiency power transfers across a large air gap. A driver just has to park their vehicle in the usual way and the system will automatically align for power transfer – helping to make parking easier and charging hassle free.
In addition, the trial will be used to leverage the Tech City entrepreneurial community, while encouraging companies to innovate services that could enhance the smart electric vehicle experience.
Commenting on the move, executive vice president of European Innovation Development at Qualcomm, Andrew Gilbert, commented that wireless charging can help eradicate the electric vehicle plug-in cable and make charging easier and simpler than ever before.
The trial will be open to any company that wishes to participate.
