Green Apple Awards honour Volkswagen and er..us!

Winners of the prestigious Awards have been announced, with winners in the category coming from the likes of Nissan, BMW, and Skoda.

The Nissan Leaf was awarded Gold in the Small Family Car category, Skoda’s Yeti E 2.0 TDI CR won Gold in Smaller SUV and 4×4 category beating the Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0TDi BlueMotion into second place and the Bluemotion 1.6 TDi won Gold in the Large Family Car category, beating the BMW 320D into Silver.

Elsewhere Fiat won Gold in the Coupes and Cabriolets category with its 500C TwinAir model, beating the BMW 1 Series coupe into second place and Jaguar’s XJ won Gold in the Luxury Car segment, beating Mercedes S350 CDi Blue.

The awards were voted for by members of the Midland Group of Motoring Writers and presented at a prestigious ceremony at the House of Commons, by the group’s chairman Ian Donaldson. The overall winner was named as the Volkswagen Golf, honoured for its low emissions of just 99g/km CO2 and fuel economy of 74.3mpg on a combined cycle.

In the sector, your very own TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk was awarded Gold, while Silver went to Ross Environmental Products and Bronze to Abbey Steel and Shearing Co.

Our humble website was recognised for the hard work put into it over the course of the last four years, since first launching in 2007, to establish it as a hub of green motoring information and news and for championing industry efforts to reduce environmental impact (we don’t like to boast, so must thank our readers, without whom the website wouldn’t even exist).

These awards were presented by Chris Hopkins of Ploughcroft Solar, who gained recognition on the BBC’s Dragon’s Den earlier this year.

The Green Apple Awards were established in 1994 by not-for-profit, independent group, The Green Organisation. With an aim to recognise and promote environmental best practice, the awards are judged by the likes of the Environment Agency, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and Chartered Institution of Wastes Management.

Final note: TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk will now go on to be considered to represent the country in the European Business Awards for the Environment along with other category winners. The Green Apple Awards are one of the few approved feeder awards for the European honours. We’ll let you know how that goes!
