The 2012 Chevrolet Volt will boast a low emissions package for California’s High Occupancy traffic lanes.
The package, which will be standard on all models sold in the state next year, sees the engine and catalytic converter modified with a secondary air-injection pump that streams ambient air into the exhaust stream. This increases the vehicle’s ability to remove pollutants.
Owners of the Volt with the low emissions package will be able to apply for a HOV lane sticker. California has more than 1,400miles of HOV lanes that were originally restricted to vehicles with two or more occupants to help minimise congestion, but have since been upgraded to allow single occupancy to encourage the adoption of advanced, low emission vehicles.
In addition, they can receive a rebate up to $1,500 through the Clean Vehicle Rebate Project. This is on top of the federal government’s $7,500 tax credit.
