It was just last week that Jaguar made headlines proving the incredible efficiency of its new diesel car (see article) – and now the luxury car maker is back in the green car headlines.
That’s because the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has honoured Jaguar Land Rover’s Range_e technology concept for a plug-in hybrid diesel electric powertrain. It has been given the 2011 award for automotive innovation.
The system was first introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in March and combines a 69kW electric motor with a 14.2kWh lithium-ion battery. It can be driven for more than 20miles on electric power alone and beyond this range a diesel hybrid drivetrain engages seamlessly. Overall CO2 output is 89g/km, fuel economy is 85mpg and the vehicle is capable of a top speed of 120mph.
According to SMMT chief executive and chairman Paul Everitt, the vehicle is meeting consumer demands.
“Jaguar Land Rover has engineered and manufactured a highly efficient and technologically advanced prototype vehicle that clearly demonstrates industry’s commitment to lowering vehicle emissions and creating exciting products for demanding consumers,” he said.
“This award champions industry innovation, promoting cutting-edge automotive engineering and design that the UK is famed for around the world.”
