Volkswagen reveals new Cross Coupe hybrid

Volkswagen has revealed a new hybrid concept which could be set to become the car maker’s answer to the Range Rover Evoque.

The new ‘Cross Coupe’ concept is also rumoured to be the German car brand’s replacement for the Tiguan and its design is intended to hint at the future styling cues which will influence all of its future SUV models.

Unveiled on the opening day of the Tokyo Motor Show today, the new concept sits between the Golf and Tiguan in size, at 4,345mm long; it outsizes the former yet is smaller than the latter. A width of 1,868 mm and height of 1,523 mm also come exactly in between these two bestsellers, meaning that the Cross Coupé’s dimensions place it in the in-demand small car segment.

The four-seat Cross Coupé is powered by two electric motors (one front and one rear) which generate 40 kW / 180 Nm of torque and 85 kW / 270 Nm respectively, and uses a TSI direct injection turbo petrol engine.  With overall power of 265 PS, the Cross Coupé can accelerate to 62 mph in just seven seconds and on to a top speed of 125 mph. Using a hybrid powertrain, the new model can travel up to 24 miles on purely electric power. No details of fuel economy and emission levels are yet known.

As expected, Volkswagen also pulled the wraps off the new Passat Alltrack, a four wheel-drive version of the Passat Estate. The Alltrack uses 4MOTION four-wheel drive and a raised ride height for greater off road performance.

In the UK, the Passat Alltrack will be available as a 2.0-litre TDI 140 PS with six-speed manual gearbox or a 2.0-litre TDI 170 PS with six-speed DSG transmission. UK dealers will start taking orders for the new car in April, with first deliveries scheduled for July.
