The Tokyo Motor Show was the setting for Subaru to introduce its hybrid Advanced Tourer Concept.
The new hybrid car combines a downsized, direct injection turbocharged 1.6litre boxer engine, which is considered one of the company’s principal engine technologies for the future, with Subaru’s all-wheel drive hybrid system.
In addition, the engine is coupled with a linear-tronic continuously variable transmission that has been refined to meet the higher output of a turbo engine. It is actually the first continuously variable transmission to be used in mass produced all-wheel drive passenger cars.
As for the hybrid system of the Advanced Tourer Concept itself, it offers an electric vehicle driving mode that allows for all-wheel drive motion while utilising only the motor at start-ups and low-speed drives. During deceleration, the regenerating mechanism uses the motor as a power generator.
