Nissan starts quick charger sales

Nissan has made its new quick charger available at its parts companies throughout Japan.

The newly developed quick charging unit offers the high performance of the existing quick charger from Nissan, but is nearly half its size and includes a host of safety features. Among them is monitoring against a potential short circuit when the charging unit is interfacing with the electric vehicle, which complies with the CHAdeMO protocol.

Developed in co-operation with Nagaoka University of Technology, the new electric car quick charging unit costs Y598,500 (US$7,700) – this is less than half the price of the existing unit. It is also eligible for a host of government incentives – customers can be reimbursed for nearly half the cost.

Nissan now hopes to install the new charging units at around 400 dealerships across Japan by the end of fiscal 2011 – doubling the number that has already been installed. It is also looking for partner companies with the aim of selling 5,000 of the new quick chargers by the end of the fiscal year 2015.
