Wireless charging for electric cars could soon become a reality after Evatran, a developer of the systems, signed contracts with six participants to fit their Chevrolet Volt and Nissan LEAF models with its Plugless Power system.
The trial, dubbed the “Apollo Launch Program”, will follow market leaders from six industry segments as they trial the systems. The participants include car rental companies, corporate campuses and utility providers; with installations to take place across the United States. The participants will offer feedback on their daily usage, user interfaces and additional functionality.
The Plugless Power system is less than 10 pounds and is installed on the undercarriage of the car based on the available space and surrounding components. A technician installs the station using a standard 240V outlet.
Installations are expected to begin in February with a second phase planned for the third quarter of 2012 with additional participants.
Furthermore, Evatran plans additional initiatives throughout the year to reach electric vehicle owners across the country and allow them to experience wireless charging with their own cars.
