Chevrolet to release new Malibu Eco

From the first quarter of the new-year, Chevrolet will release the Chevrolet Malibu Eco with eAssist – the first Chevrolet vehicle to feature the light electrification system that is already being used in General Motors’ Buick line-up.

The new Malibu Eco will have a host of impressive statistics – including 12 per cent greater highway fuel economy than current models with the 2.4litre engine at an estimated 37mpg.

At its heart is the eAssist system, which includes a 32cell, 0.5kW lithium-ion battery, an electric motor generator and the next generation Hydra-Matic 6T40 six-speed transmission. It also includes an air-cooled 115V lithium-ion battery that is worked into the power pack in a compartment between the rear seat and the boot.

The eAssist technology allows for a numerically lower 2.64 final drive ratio. There are several internal transmission changes to clutch controls and the added electric power provided by the eAssist system makes it possible for higher gearing to improve steady state efficiency without impacting acceleration performance. It also allows the Ecotec engine to shut down fuel delivery during certain deceleration conditions, which helps to save fuel.

There are driver selectable modes, which include: Eco mode, to maximise the auto-stop system; and Comfort mode, to reduce the frequency and duration of auto-stop and maximise cabin comfort.

Furthermore, the new Chevrolet Malibu Eco features several aerodynamic enhancing features with engineers removing around 60 counts of wind drag compared to its predecessor. It will be one of the first vehicles in the midsize segment with a fuel saving, active shutter system.

It will go on sale for $25,995, with a $760 destination charge.
