Demand for electric vehicle telematics is set to expand at a rapid rate, according to a new report from Pike Research.
It suggests that nearly nine out of 10 plug-in electric vehicles sold during this year will include a basic telematics package – and that this will grow to 94 per cent by 2017. Indeed annual revenue from the market will reach $1.4billion by the same year.
Telematics systems are split into two varieties within the report. There are basic telematics systems that provide data connections for emergency systems, charging equipment locations and vehicle monitoring; and connected vehicle telematics that will provide live traffic information, as well as streaming content, weather information and so on.
In addition, plug-in electric vehicle telematics are expected to play a key role in the smart grid. They will have the ability to communicate with both utilities and the grid, which will assist utilities in anticipating the location and duration of plug-in electric vehicle charging. They will also aid in vehicle-to-grid energy transfers, helping to manage demand and assist with grid balancing.
Basic systems are expected to be standard features on most plug-in electric vehicles by 2017; and Pike suggests that by the end of the forecast period, 80 per cent of plug-in electric vehicles will include connected vehicle systems.
