The US Department of Energy (DOE) is determined to reduce the costs of electric car chargers – and as such, it’s putting some serious funding into the cause.
It has awarded nearly $7million in research and development funding to four projects that have the goal of cutting current costs by 50 per cent over the next three years. The funding will also look at smart charging capabilities that will ensure electric vehicles enhance electrical grid capacity.
So what are the projects that will benefit? Let’s take a look:
- Delta Products Corporation: Scoops $1,997,450 from the DOE towards streamlining the development of residential electric vehicle chargers that need low-cost secure wireless networks.
- Siemens Corporate Research: Picks up $1,617,619 from the DOE to redesign its current electric vehicle supply equipment system and charging stations in residential areas.
- General Electric Global Research: Has been awarded $1,362,318 from the DOE to improve the design and infrastructure for commercial chargers for fleets of electric vehicles.
- Eaton Corporation: Benefits from $1,837,004 from the DOE to develop and demonstrate electric vehicle chargers that can support the smart grid.
