Internet giant Google and German carmaker Daimler have announced that their strategic partnership will now run a little deeper.
Speaking at the International Consumer Electronics Show, it was revealed that Google will provide Daimler with access to the Google Maps application programming interface (API) that will bring map-related applications directly to Daimler vehicles, while also allowing Daimler to make use of other APIs as they are developed.
Now Daimler, the name behind Mercedes-Benz and Smart, will be able to use Google Maps for its in-car map displays, while also integrating other Google services into Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
The companies have been working together since 2007 when Daimler became the first automaker in the United States to feature the Google “Send-to-Car” functionality.
As of last year, Mercedes-Benz began offering COMAND Online – a telematics system that incorporates cloud-based applications, including Google Street View.
