Some critics believe that electric cars simply lack the speed and power to be a match for vehicles with internal combustion engines – however, they may have a whole new perception now that electric cars may receive their own motorsport series.
The International Motor Sports Association, the American Le Mans Series and project specialists Quimera, are teaming up to prepare investors and other interested parties for the launch of an EV (electric vehicle) series in 2013. It is expected to have a number of categories and be open to manufacturers that want to showcase their green credentials.
Javier de Rocafort, the Quimera chairman of the board, commented that the project will not be confined to developing environmentally friendly cars and instead will also encourage the dramatic shift that is soon to occur in the industry.
Among the vehicles to debut in a demonstration run at selected American Le Mans events will be the Quimera AEGT All-Electric GT car.
In addition, as part of an effort to embrace all cleantech concepts, there is some consideration about involving motorcycles as part of the event roster.
Categories outlined so far, include: two GT categories – all-electric GT (525kW-700bhp) and Touring GT (300kW-390bhp); open wheel – F3 type (300kW-390bhp); an LMP type that is yet to be finalised; and the TTXGP World Championship is also expected to expand to include more classes and different race formats.
