Green car fans should keep their eyes peeled for the new Mercedes-Benz B 180 BlueEFFICIENCY model – as it manages to produce 16 per cent fewer carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions compared to its predecessor.
The reduction is achieved over the vehicle’s entire lifecycle, including production and service over 99,400miles. Its primary energy consumption during its entire lifecycle is cut by 14 per cent – around 2,400litres of petrol.
As a result, the vehicle has picked up an environmental certificate in accordance with standard TR14062. According to Professor Dr Herbert Kohler, the chief environmental officer at Daimler AG, it sets benchmarks in the field of both aerodynamics and its drive system.
Indeed it is these areas that are targeted by the BlueEFFICIENCY technologies – it works on optimisation of the powertrain; aerodynamics; tyres for minimum rolling resistance; lightweight construction; and driver information to encourage a greener driving style. The B-Class also meets the recycling rate of 95 per cent by weight, which is to become mandatory in January, 2015.
Overall, the fuel consumption of the Mercedes-Benz B-Class 180 BlueEFFICIENCY with dual-clutch transmission ranges from 38mpg-40mpg depending on the fitted tyres.
