Opel-Vauxhall Ampera takes top spot

It may be early days for electric powered vehicles – but already a clear leader is emerging in the European market.

The Opel/Vauxhall Ampera (pictured) is the number one selling passenger electric-drive vehicle having taken more than a 20 per cent market share during May, 2012.

According to Opel e-mobility launch director Enno Fuchs, the vehicle is enjoying significant success in markets with government incentives such as the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, the Ampera has more than a 77 per cent share of the passenger electric vehicle market – it is also the best-selling electric vehicle in both Switzerland and Germany.

Part of the reason for its success is its range-extended capabilities. It is powered by a 16kWh lithium-ion battery and can travel distances of 25-50miles on electric operation alone. Then in extended range mode, it can cover a total of 311miles without refuelling thanks to a 1.4litre petrol engine.
