BMW makes huge electric vehicle investment

BMW is ramping up its commitment to its new wave of electric vehicles – by pouring €125million into its plants in Landshut and Dingolfing.

The plants will produce components for the BMW I model electric drive vehicles including the BMW i3, set to be introduced at the end of 2013; and the BMW i8 (pictured) in 2014.

According to BMW group board member Frank-Peter Arndt, both Dingolfing and Landshut will produce major powertrains, as well as chassis and body parts. Dingolfing is set to provide the battery, e-gear and aluminium structure of the chassis for the i3; as well as the front axle, rear chassis and front end of the i8. Meanwhile, Landshut will supply the electric motors and range extender, as well as the high voltage battery and motor gear units, for the BMW I production models.

The announcement was made at a meeting with Peter Ramsauer, the German Transport Minister.
