Toyota breaks electric car speed record

If you attended the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado recently, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d seen a Formula 1 racing car zipping past you at incredible speeds. However, what you really saw was a new electric car record being set my Toyota Motorsport GmbH.

The electric car race record was established by the TMG EV P002 (pictured) which set a time of 10minutes 15.380 seconds on the 12.4mile track.

Its success, guided by driver Fumio Nutahara, broke the previous electric car record of 12minutes 20.084seconds and was good enough for sixth place overall competing against a host of vehicles with conventional powertrains.

In Pikes Peak configuration, the vehicle has a top speed of 149mph with maximum power of 350kW from two axial flux motors. It also delivers 900Nm of torque.

It’s not the first time it has been a record breaker either: back in August 2011, it set a new electric lap record at the Nurburgring.
