Dow Jones Sustainability Index honours BMW and Fiat

BMW and Fiat have made it onto the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI) for both Europe and the World.

These European carmakers are the sole representatives of the auto industry which make onto the list, although on the world list, they are joined by Volkswagen.

Membership in the prestigious DJSI World and DJSI Europe equity indexes is limited to companies judged best-in-class in terms of their economic, as well as environmental and social performance, and is considered highly sought-after as a boost to their businesses’ reputations.

Fiat, which makes it onto the lists for the fourth consecutive year, with a score  91/100 compared to an overall average of 74/100, welcomed the news.

Fiat CEO, Sergio Marchionne, commented: “A culture of responsibility is integral to Fiat Group’s business model, because we believe that the true value of a multi-national organisation such as ours is also determined by its level of environmental awareness, respect for people, fair and transparent conduct in commercial relationships and positive contribution to local communities.”

Companies are judged on several criteria to make it onto the list including  environmentally where things like climate change and emission reduction strategy; environmental policies and management; product stewardship are important. In a social dimension areas such as human capital development and management; occupational health and safety; stakeholder engagement; and corporate citizenship and philanthropy are assessed.

S&P Dow Jones Indices LLC is is the world's largest, global resource for index-based concepts, data and research. Collaborating with SAM, the investment boutique focused exclusively on Sustainability Investing, the Sustainability Indexes have been complied each year since 1999.
