Smart to introduce electric scooters; new electric car announcement

Smart, the Daimler brand famous for its small electric cars such as the Smart Fortwo EV, is now set to expand its portfolio by introducing an electric two-wheeler.

The company has teamed up with Vectrix to introduce the Smart Scooter alongside the Smart Electric Drive and the Smart eBike in 2014. The scooter will complete Smart’s portfolio of electric vehicles and will mean it offers an electric solution for short, medium and long distances (up to 87miles).

The Smart Scooter (pictured) was originally introduced at the Paris Motor Show in 2010 – but will have its look and features updated by the German carmaker.

In addition, it was also announced at the Los Angeles Auto Show 2012 that a new Smart Electric Drive will be introduced in the USA next year.

According to Stephen Cannon, the president and CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA, the vehicle will attain 122mpg-e – placing it only marginally behind the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, which achieves 126mpg-e, but ahead of all other battery electric cars currently on the market.
