News in brief: BMW to unveil plug-in hybrid car

The Geneva Motor Show may barely be in the record books, but already attentions are turning to the next big motoring showcase: the New York International Auto Show, which kicks off on March 27.

BMW will use the event to unveil its BMW Concept Active Tourer plug-in hybrid (pictured) for the first time in North America: as well as showcasing the diesel BMW 328d.

For green car fans, the BMW Concept Active Tourer will grab particular attention: it features a 1.5litre three-cylinder petrol engine alongside an electric motor, helping it achieve 95mpg. When it has been fully charged it can travel for 18.6miles on electric power alone.

It also includes a host of cool new features: such as a “cool shade” composite glass roof with suspended particle device technology. This allows the driver to make the roof either crystal clear or dark just by pressing a button.

Meanwhile, the BMW 328d comes with a twin power turbo four-cylinder engine that offers 180hp and 380Nm of torque. It can race from 0-60mph in 7.2seconds and yet has fuel economy expected to surpass 40mpg.
