Volvo reveals plug-in hybrid concept

Describing it as "no futuristic dream car", Volvo has revealed its new Concept Coupe (pictured): the first model from its Scalable Product Architecture, and also a plug-in hybrid vehicle.

The concept car boasts a two-litre Drive-E petrol engine with both turbo and a supercharger. Its petrol engine is linked with an electric motor and offers a total output of 400hp with more than 600Nm of torque.

According to Volvo, the vehicle points to the design elements of future cars: including the Volvo XC90 which will be revealed in 2014. Thomas Ingenlath, the senior vice president of design for the company, states that when the XC90 debuts, its links to the Concept Coupe will be obvious: even though they are very different cars.

What is also notable is that the Volvo Concept Coupe takes much of its inspiration from the 1960s P1800 sports car.
