Toyota has reached a major milestone in hybrid sales, hitting 6 million global sales by December 31, 2013.
A nice way for the carmaker to round the year off, the latest millionth milestone was achieved in the fastest time yet for the brand, taking just nine months since it celebrated hitting 5 million sales.
Since its Prius hybrid first launched in 1997, Toyota has significantly expanded its hybrid line-up and now sells 24 hybrid car models and one plug-in hybrid model in approximately 80 countries around the world.
The undisputed leader in hybrid sales, Toyota is expected to build on its market dominance with the launch of 15 more hybrid models in the near future including the new SUV models, the Harrier Hybrid and Highlander Hybrid for the United States market.
Toyota calculates that as of the end of last year, its hybrid vehicles have resulted in approximately 41 million fewer tonnes of CO2 emissions than would have been emitted by gasoline-powered vehicles of similar size and driving performance. Toyota also estimates that its hybrid vehicles have saved approximately 15 million kilolitres of gasoline too.
In the UK, Toyota offers the Prius, Prius Plug-in Hybrid, Prius+, Auris Hybrid, Auris Touring Sports Hybrid and the Yaris Hybrid as well as Lexus hybrids, the IS 300h, GS 300h, RX 450h and CT 200h.
