Which do you believe will be the ultimate fuel of the future for our vehicles?

An interview with the Quiet Car Company

September 23, 2008 Posted by: Lee Sibbald

The Quiet Car CompanyThe Quiet Car Company® are a Lymington based company based on the south coast of England. The Quiet Car Company has a dream of making transport cleaner, cheaper and fun. Vaughan Richmond spoke to TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk in September 2008.

TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk: What important steps has the company made in making this dream a reality?

Vaughan Richmond: QC1 and QC2 are now a reality.

TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk: There is the Quiet Car 1 and the Quiet Car 2. They both have a range of approximately 60 miles and a maximum speed of 35 and 50 miles per hour respectively. Do you believe that this is sufficient for the modern motorist or are there plans to increase the range and maximum speed of your vehicles?

Vaughan Richmond: At present we are town, city and country so speeds are ‘quiet’ sufficient.

TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk: How long will it take to fully recharge a Quiet Car?

Vaughan Richmond: QC1 = charging time 5-6 hours full charge, QC2 = charging time 4-5 hours.

TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk: What would the running costs of a Quiet Car be?

Vaughan Richmond: Running costs zero!! This is the whole idea - up to 50mph tyres do not really wear and bearings do not get hot - given a certain quality standard. Light bulbs etc of course.

TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk: Do you feel that electricity is a viable solution to fossil fuels?

Vaughan Richmond: Yes - nuclear next - Why have the French the best nuke tech? Also, why are EDF so interested in the UK market?

TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk: Does the UK need to drastically increase the number of electric charging retail outlets in order to keep up with the increased demand for cleaner, cheaper vehicles?

Vaughan Richmond: Yes.

TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk: What does the future hold for electric cars? Where do you see both the cars and the Quiet Car Company in 5, 10 and 50 years time?

Vaughan Richmond: We have orders from European countries that have no oil - which will keep us busy for the foreseeable future.

“zero running costs” complete twaddle what about the cost to recharge the battery? Thats not free is it?

What provisions have been made to recycle the battery at the end of its useful life and what is the cost?

Battery’s are renowned for being very difficult and expensive to recycle and particularly very un-green and un-eco-friendly. So whats your solution to this problem?

Cars with top speeds of 35 and 50 mph will do nothing for ecology all they will achieve is slowing down faster cars, probably leading to traffic jams and continual stop-start driving increasing the fumes from petrol/diesel vehicles as they grind to a halt behind the electric cars.

According to the press QC1 and QC2 are made in China as petrol cars and then converted here to electric. What is the cost to the planet in pollution miles of shipping these cars across the world?

Why have Quiet Cars not sourced a car made in the UK as their base model to convert?

Also on a recent TV documentary it was revealed there are only 16 re-charging points in London, none in Birmingham, Manchester, Nottingham, Sheffield, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Belfast or Dublin.
Interestingly none of the councils in those cities had plans to install any as they considered there was no demand for them.

So if you buy one of these vehicles Quiet Car Smart car or some other make, it seems they only do about 40 miles before they need a recharge
which is alright if your journey from home and back is under 40 miles, if not then scores of these cars are going to be left littering our roads, causing traffic jams whilst waiting to be towed home for a plug in.

So who in their right mind is going to pay £8995 for QC1 and £12995 for QC2 and then have to constantly pay recovery fees to get their cars home for a recharge.

Running costs zero - I don’t think so, as Quentin Wilson said about these Quiet Cars “Chinese Quiet Cars won’t give the Prius a run for its money”

Wonder what Vaughan Richmond drives? Any bets on “not a quiet car?”
