Which do you believe will be the ultimate fuel of the future for our vehicles?

An interview with Titan Environmental

September 4, 2008 Posted by: Lee Sibbald

titan-environmental Titan Environmental are a pioneer in the manufacture and supply of storage solutions for oil, fuel, lubricants, adblue, chemicals, biofuels and water. Titan’s range of tanks and containers provide the best option for every situation whether domestic, commercial, industrial or agricultural.

Titan prides itself on its quality, innovation, environmental awareness and customer relations.

Recently, there have been reports of safety concerns as the manufacture of biofuels becomes more widespread. In terms of storing the product safely, how can Titan Environmental help?

We invest time and resources to ensure we are at the forefront of developments to ensure safe storage and dispensing of biofuels.

Use of biodiesel, which is derived from sources, such as vegetable oil, has been on the increase across Europe since the late eighties. Typically, it produces 60 per cent less net carbon dioxide emissions than its mineral equivalent, is non-toxic and biodegradable. Yet storing and dispensing this product calls for the same regulations as conventional diesel.

We warn biodiesel users against buying conventional diesel dispensing tanks for blends above 5%. There are some significant differences between Biodiesel and standard diesel and consumers are going to come unstuck if they don’t have the correct equipment.

Spills, as with any bulk fuel or chemical storage, can and should be avoided. Our spill containment and prevention products, including Spill Kits and Spill Pallets, protect handlers and we have chemical and oil absorbent products to cope with emergency spills.

Do insurers recognise your storage solutions as “taking reasonable care” to prevent fire?

When fitted in accordance with building regulations Titan’s BioMaster range of tanks are recognised by insurers as the correct and compliant way to store fuel.

BioMaster tanks are manufactured from top quality polyethylene. Their robust, ribbed construction protects against accidental damage and will never rust or rot, even in the most exposed location.

What do you think biofuels can offer the motor industry in 10/20/50yrs time?

At any level, biofuels are about reducing the industry’s reliance on mineral diesel and its overall carbon footprint. It’s not just about the carbon footprint of vehicles; biofuels grown and produced locally also help to reduce the carbon footprint and environmental impact attached to the current production of mineral diesel.

How you think biofuel production will affect the use of traditional fossil fuels?

For the foreseeable future, it seems likely that biofuels for road use will be blended with mineral diesel, but we have already seen the ever-increasing market demand for blends with a higher biodiesel content, sometimes as much as 100 per cent (B100). All this reduces the overall demand for fossil fuels.

The new BioMaster range is suitable for dispensing biodiesel EN BS 14214 or DIN 51606 up to 100% blend (B100).

What methods of pollution control do you offer?

Our BioMaster bunded storage and dispensing tanks provide safe storage for biodiesel, Spill Kits respond to any spills of oils and chemicals and Spill Pallets provide bunded protection for drums and IBC’s.

The bunded chararcterisitic of the biomaster Tanks provides a double-skin protection which exceeds all current legislation requirements for fuel tank installations while the second skin will catch any potential leaks.

Recently there has been a rise in the theft of fuel as petrol and diesel prices have soared. Is security of fuel increasingly important?

Fuel security is becoming more of an issue especially as prices continue to spiral upwards. Titan has developed an on-tank alarm beacon alarm designed for commercial applications, and a retrofit alarm for domestic applications. Both will be launched in the very near future.
