An electric car that goes like Lightning

A car described as being more powerful than a Porsche with a top speed of 130mph and the ability to race from 0-60mph in just four seconds sounds more like an environmental nightmare than a green car.

However, the Electric Lightning GT is very much an electric car as it emits no greenhouse gas emissions. However, it hardly fits the picture of traditional conventions that electrics are slow and clunky and can barely travel a few miles without needing to be recharged.

Instead, the Electric Lightning GT is very much a super car. A mere ten minutes of battery charging allows the driver to travel 200 miles and with regenerative braking, the battery gets a nice boost every time the car decelerates.

The vehicle is expected to break down barriers for green cars by appealing to motorists who don’t want to sacrifice high performance in order to drive in an eco-friendly manner. According to the Lightning Car Company, based in Peterborough, it is ten times cheaper to run than a typical petrol car and charging the batteries costs just 2.2p/mile compared to a 26.4p/mile cost for driving with a petrol engine.

The car is set to be unveiled at the British Motor Show later this month, but it has already attracted interest from a number of celebrities. The car will not go on sale until 2009, and then it will cost a whopping £120,000 – but if you have a £15,000 deposit now you can secure delivery.

Lightning GT to make the electric car cool

Looking like a classic British sports cars, the Lightning GT electric car will be made from a similar material to Formula One cars. There are three versions of the sporty electric number planned. Due to be released in 2008, there will be a luxury model, a sports model and a version with extended range that could go upto 250 miles from a 10-minute charge. The price for one of these sexy motors is expected to be in the £150,000 range depending on model and extras – but if that sounds like a lot – don’t forget you won’t have to buy any petrol.
