Green Car Award 2009

Volvo C30 named 'Green Car of the Year'

The Volvo C30 DRIVe has been named's 'Green Car of the Year' 2009.

Launched this year, the C30 DRIVe, part of Volvo's range of environmental options, has CO2 emissions from just 99g/km. Released in the spring, the original C30 DRIVe produced CO2 levels from 104g/km but with a few tweaks the C30 with start-stop function hit the magic road tax free sub-100g/km category, bringing it in line with some of the other super green elite such as the Toyota iQ, Ford Fiesta ECOnetic and the SEAT Ibiza Ecomotive.

The order books on the new C30 DRIVe opened in October and with its amazing fuel efficiency of up to 74.3 mpg on the combined cycle, 2010 will no doubt see this coupe prove popular thanks to its great combination of style, efficiency and eco-credentials.

So what made this award-winning* website pick the Volvo C30 DRIVe?

Two reasons- not only was the car voted top by an overwhelming majority in a recent poll on the website**, but secondly the car was unanimously voted green car of the year by the motoring journalists behind the website.

Not only does the car qualify for free VED thanks to its excellent 99g/km of CO2 emissions but it also offers an amazing 74.3 mpg on a combined cycle, or around 857 miles on a tank, making one of the most fuel efficient vehicles in its class.

Commenting on the award,'s editor, Faye Sunderland said: "The C30 DRIVe with stop/start technology is genuinely a fantastic addition to the 'green scene' this year. In such a short space of time, Volvo successfully slashed its emissions and as a relative newcomer in the green car market, it is impressive to see the Swedish carmaker make such strong progress in such a short time. A deserved winner, Volvo can afford to be very proud of the C30 DRIVe as its flagship green model.

"There were some truly great additions to the green car market this year; the Insight, the iQ, the smart fortwo diesel and the BMW 316d ES to name a few. However the Volvo C30 DRIVe is a worthy winner. With 2010 just around the corner it will be interesting to see what new eco-friendly models we will be welcoming next," she concluded.

Peter Rask, managing director for Volvo Car UK commented: "We are honoured and delighted that the Volvo C30 1.6D DRIVe with Start/Stop has been named's Green Car of the Year. Volvo Cars' vision is to develop cars that are entirely free from harmful exhaust emissions and environment-impacting carbon dioxide. Emitting only 99g/km of CO2 the Volvo C30 1.6D DRIVe with Start/Stop shows how Volvo are well on their way to achieving this vision."
