Quiet Car 1 - electric cars
August 4, 2008 Posted by: Lee Sibbald
Several of the big name car manufacturers have been beaten to the punch on the production of electric cars by comparative unknowns. One such example is the Quiet Car Company, which made its debut at the British International Motor Show in 2008 with two vehicles – the Quiet Car 1 and the Quiet Car 2.

History of the Quiet Car 1
The Quiet Car Company was set up as a reaction to rising fuel prices across the UK. In the summer of 2008, oil prices hit a then record of $146 a barrel while diesel prices exceeded £1.30 a litre and petrol rose to be in excess of £1.20 a litre.
The company is based in Lymington, Hampshire, having made a name for itself selling three different electric bicycles. It launched both its Quiet Car 1 and Quiet Car 2 at the British International Motor Show in 2008 replacing noisy combustion engines with electric motors and battery packs.
The Quiet Car 1 can help its drivers save money over the lifetime of the vehicle with it taking only around £1 to fuel the vehicle for 100 miles.
Environmental credentials of the Quiet Car 1
The key user base for the Quiet Car 1 is predominantly environmentally conscious drivers that want to get behind the wheel of a vehicle that produces zero emissions. Electric cars have faced some criticism due to the energy used coming from non-renewable sources. However, increasingly renewable sources are being used for electricity generation and even with the current energy mix electric cars have far fewer emissions than conventional vehicles.
The Quiet Car 1 has all the financial advantages of an electric car including being exempt from vehicle excise duty and the London Congestion Charge. As it uses lithium-ion batteries it does not suffer many of the drawbacks of traditional electric cars as it has a comparatively high top speed and an extended range.
