Certain professions suffer from an image problem - tell someone you’re a tax officer for example, and you’re sure to be met with groans. So it’s reassuring to see that one of those much maligned groups is doing its best to enhance its image with an eco-friendly scheme.

The tests used by car manufacturers to determine fuel economy and carbon dioxide figures have come in for criticism on a motoring website.
Channel 4’s website claims the existing tests do not produce accurate figures for car buyers. It carried out ‘real world’ fuel economy tests on eight low-emission vehicles and found that they failed to meet the official figures. In fact, three cars were as much as 10mpg short of the advertised fuel consumption rates.

The Fiat 500 has further enhanced its green credentials further after scooping top honours for its 1.2 Pop version in the Green Supermini category of the What Car? Green Awards in London.
The awards, which took place at the British International Motor Show, are intended to highlight and recognise the UK motor industry’s most economical and environmentally-friendly cars. The highly sought-after Fiat 500 will become an even more appealing prospect with the production of a petrol/electric hybrid engine offering incredible economy and even lower CO2 emissions. The aim is to produce a 500 that emits less than 90 g/km. The Ibiza Ecomotive and Polo Bluemotion currently lead the way with CO2 emissions of only 99 g/km.

Italian giant Fiat Automobiles has recorded the lowest average CO2 emissions value for vehicles sold in 2007, according to a recent analysis by JATO Dynamics, a world leader for consultancy and research in the automotive field.

2008 will be a fascinating year for the industry when we will see what measures consumers will take to prove their commitment to creating a greener environment.
