Car drivers across western USA, and particularly in California, have been urged to drive in a more eco-friendly fashion to save cash and the environment - and now the EcoDriving programme has received support from some of the leading car manufacturers.

The global credit crunch has taken its toll on the automotive industry with the new car market falling by 18.6 per cent during August. However, those being hit the hardest are the manufacturers producing vehicles with the highest levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
According to research by Clean Green Cars, the four brands with the highest CO2 profiles - namely Land Rover, Porsche, Chrysler and Jeep - saw sales slide by more than half during August.

Figures published recently revealed that Fiat and MINI are the only mainstream manufacturers whose average tailpipe CO2 is now under 140 g/km. This is the figure that the car manufacturers set themselves ten years ago in a voluntary agreement. The data that has been published for 2008 shows just how far they have fallen short.

New London major, Boris Johnson is expected to review the current congestion charge scheme and reconsider plans to introduce harsher charges in October this year.
Former Major Ken Livingstone’s plan to introduce a £25 per day charge for vehicles emitting 225g/km CO2 or over is expected to be one of the first casualties of the regime change. Porsche, who were launching a legal challenge against the plans, will no doubt be delighted if the Boris does indeed scrap the £25 charge.

Porsche’s ongoing battle with Ken Livingstone over the proposed congestion charge increase has found support from Mitsubishi.
Lance Bradley of Mitsubishi believes that Livingstone’s plan “is not a well co-ordinated plan to heavily penalise one group of vehicles over those emitting one gram less”. Bradley does however concede that the new charge will force car manufacturers to place added importance on CO2 emissions when developing their cars.

Porche announced on the 7th January 2007 that its new four-door Porsche Panamera GT will also be built as a hybrid version. The Panamera hybrid will feature components already used when constructing the Cayenne hybrid.
Porsche claim that the new hybrid will feature a mode that will allow the Panamera to run completely free of emissions. The release is pencilled in for early 2010.
