The Honda Jazz comes with the choice of just two engines – the 1.2-litre (76bhp) and the 1.4-litre (82bhp) petrols. The 1.4-litre petrol is obviously the nippier of the two but both engines provide decent performance. Acceleration is excellent and the Jazz handles the motorway driving with ease.

The Jazz offers a feisty drive with first-rate body control. The suspension is rather too firm though and bumps can really be felt in the cabin. The steering is slightly unresponsive but, all-in-all, the car is great fun to drive.

Honda has a well deserved name for reliability and the well built interior is made from an impressive standard of materials. The build quality is reason why the Honda Jazz is a cut above most superminis, and explains why it is also more expensive.

Anti-lock brakes and twin front airbags come as standard across the entire Jazz range but only the top-of-the-range models are fitted with side airbags. Security measures are numerous and effective. Euro NCAP awarded four-stars for adult occupancy, Honda will be looking to improve upon this when the release the new version.

The space offered in the Jazz is remarkable for such a short supermini. Legroom and headroom is ample for both those in the front and the rear of the car. The boot is large and the load capacity can be increased to an enormous 845-litres by folding flat the rear seats.

The Honda Jazz is not the cheapest supermini to buy but its residual values are generally pretty good. Good fuel economy and low CO2 emissions also add up to make it an attractive proposition.
