Road Test Reports Says 4 star rating
LEE SAYS

Performance Performance - 4 stars

The three-door hatchback has a maximum speed of 140mph and can go from 0-60mph in a fraction over 7 seconds. The 1.6-litre turbocharged diesel engine is perfect, providing formidable acceleration. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard but there is also a six-speed automatic available.

Ride & Handling Ride & Handling - 5 stars

The Mini has excellent grip and handling. The composed ride is slightly firm, choose the Sports suspension and it becomes even firmer. The Mini Cooper S handles towns and motorways with aplomb.

Build Quality & Reliability Build Quality & Reliability - 4 stars

The issues that plagued the first-generation Mini (with the electronics and suspension) have been solved and Mini (BMW) uses the technology that has excelled within its other models. The overall feel of the interior is of solidity and refinement. The quality of the material used has certainly improved.

Safety & Security Safety & Security - 4 stars

Euro NCAP awarded the Mini Cooper S the full five stars for adult occupation during its crash tests. Three stars were awarded for child occupation, two stars for pedestrian protection. ABS brakes, stability and traction control plus six airbags (front, side and curtain) come as standard with the Cooper S. Security is very good.

Space & Practicality Space & Practicality - 3 stars

The Mini is certainly still just for two, the rear seats simply do not offer the space for passengers to sit comfortably. The front seats have been reshaped to present better back and leg support over long distances. The boot isn't vast at just 16- litres but this can be increased to 680-litres by folding flat the rear seats.

Ownership & Value Ownership & Value - 4 stars

CO2 emissions are low at 149g/km, this is a real result considering the power in the Cooper S. The low CO2 figure will keep the price of the road tax down. The insurance group is 15 which may be a deterrent to many. A fantastic residual value of 57% after three years goes to make this Mini a very sound leasing option. At around £16,000 the Mini Cooper S is not inexpensive but the great residual values, low CO2 figures and the impressive economy come together to create a very appealing package.
